Let us know your interests...we'll plan the ultimate trip to Chile for you.
Overview/Highlights:
The Area:
The Southern most part of Latin America is dominated by the vast wilderness of Patagonia. An area that is scarcely inhabited or developed. Because of this, it offers almost unlimited possibilities for many kinds of outdoor activities: fishing, rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking or bird watching. The beautiful Andes Mountains form the spine of Patagonia. Squeezed between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean lies the thin territory of Chile, the homeland of, amongst others, the Mapuche Indians. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the first colonists arrived in Chilean Patagonia. By the lack of any form of infrastructure the only access was by boat or horseback. Over the last decades only a few small villages have been established. Following the recent opening of the Carretera Austral, Patagonia has a newfound, though limited accessibility by road and even today, huge areas still remain completely unknown. Because of this, a pure and almost untouched landscape remains to be explored.
One of the geographic attractions of Chilean Patagonia is its width, or rather its narrowness. On average its not even 100 km or 60 miles wide. As a consequence it is possible to experience totally different climate zones and landscapes in only a short distance. While the mighty Condor circles the bare peaks of the high Andes, nearby, in the fjords, hungry dolphins.
Residing in the Southern Hemisphere, the Patagonian seasons are exactly opposite to the European and North American seasons. The highest temperatures and lowest rainfall rates are measured in the summer months of January and February. However, in general, the area is favored by a mild sea climate, in which the coastal areas receive the most and the mountain areas the least rainfall. A golden rule here is: "if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes". The fortunate absence of bears, poisonous snakes or swarms of mosquitoes makes Patagonia a safe and pleasant outdoor destination.
In the midst of the evergreen forest of the Province of Aysén, on the banks of the beautiful Río Palena in Southern Chile, the home-like but stylish lodge of The Patagonian Base Camp is located. Just in front of the lodge, a large beach offers perfect possibilities for fishing and as a berthing place from where the river can be explored. The lodge offers accommodation for a maximum 14 guests. The 6 double and quadruple rooms, with en-suite facilities, all offer a beautiful view over the Río Palena. On the terrace at the riverside or in the cozy lounge by the fireplace, you will share your stories and adventures with your fellow travelers. During dinner you will enjoy the quality of international cuisine accompanied with the best available Chilean wines.

THE FISH:
Countless rivers, creeks and brooks bring the rain- and melting water from the Andes. In almost all of these waters wild trout live and reproduce in abundance. Even
salmon is finding its way upstream to their spawning beds. The population of trout consists of wild brown- and rainbow trout, but also of brook trout. Every day you will have the chance to catch a real wild trophy fish. A good presentation of well-selected dry flies, nymphs and streamers is of eminent importance in your hunt for wild trout. But nothing equals the thrill of catching real wild trout in, without any doubt, one of world's most beautiful natural environments. During your expeditions in the wilderness you might expect to catch rainbow, brown and brook trout, Coho (Silver), Chinook (King) and Atlantic salmon.
The fortunate absence of bears, poisonous snakes or swarms of mosquitoes makes Patagonia a safe and pleasant outdoor destination. Because Chile is so narrow you can fish in totally different scenery each day. Walking on the banks or wading in small rivers in the dry semi-pampas, where grasshoppers are the daily food for brown trout; drifting in a bellyboat in a mountain lake, which is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, while a damsel imitation is decorating your tippet; wading in the mouth of a river, where salmon, steelheads and searun browns commence their upstream journey to their spawning fields while feeding on Pancora (a southern crayfish specie).
From the Base Camp fishing trips by driftboat, raft or jet boat, by horseback or on feet, by bellyboat or 4-wheeldrive cars are organized. We bring you to places where you will feel, and indeed often are, the first fisherman ever. Depending on your preferred package, you will fish in the midst of the evergreen forests, in the semi-pampa, in the ocean or in a fjord. You will overnight and enjoy your meals in The Base Camp, in the log cabin or in tents. Our guides will accompany you during all expeditions and will be pleased to offer you their services and knowledge of the area, the fish and the fishing.
The Patagonian BaseCamp:
The Patagonian BaseCamp was built in the valley of the Río Palena, wedged between the coastal mountains and the Andes. Next to the river, the Carretera Austral runs through the same valley. This location provides the perfect base to explore the area, either by car, horseback, on foot or riverboat.
Next to the lodge we have available a rustic log cabin, on the shore of the lake Lago Verde. The lake is located at about a 2.5 hours drive from the lodge in an area dominated by semi-pampa. This area is ruled by a very pleasant microclimate. Both the environment and the flora and fauna are very distinct from that surrounding The Base Camp. By being able to offer you both locations in one holiday, you will have the possibility to explore the diversity of untouched Patagonia.
