FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (7/2005) Groovestar Nationals Slopestyle Competition @ Snow Park NZ Wanaka, New Zealand Despite clouds and variable visibility on the hill, there was a good turn out at the fourth and final day of the NZSBA Nationals. Today's competition, the Groovstar Slopestyle, held at Snow Park in Wanaka featured some amazing riders from around the globe. With athletes ranging from age 11 to over 40, there was a full spectrum of talent present. The day kicked off with riders taking two practice runs followed by two judged runs in the qualifications. The slopestyle course consisted of two tabletop jumps followed by two rails and boxes. Some weather delays kept the riders busy enjoying tasty treats and drinks from the Snow Park café. When the fog lifted, the judges were ready to make some decisions of who was going to advance to the finals. Technical spins on the table-tops and some insane tricks on the rails helped the top scoring 15% of riders make it through to the afternoon's finals. "We have had a really good turn out of riders today. The day was very challenging and some riders emerged out of the pack to surprise us, Andrew Kennely especially" commented Graham Dunbar, NZSBA executive director. With precious FIS points and Groovstar swag up for grabs, local and international riders alike battled it out as the competition cranked on. Once again, local kiwi rider Julianne Bray made amazing effort on the course and pulled out some remarkable tricks with awesome style in the open women's division. In the men's division the North Island riders certainly showed the South Islanders they were holding their own on the course. At the end of the day, the prize-giving ceremony for the open men's division saw all kiwi riders on the podium. First place went to Queenstown rider Nick Hyne, followed by Nick Brown and Stef Zeestaten respectively. Again, New Zealand ruled the open women's division with Femke Hilbink taking out first place. Nabila Piper placed second and with Katie Scott following in third place.
