WANAKA NEW ZEALAND ACTIVITIES

Wanaka, sheltered behind the Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand, is the ideal holiday destination. There is something for everyone, whatever your age, ability or sense of adventure. From fishing to flightseeing, tramping to tennis, horsetrekking to heli skiing, goldpanning to golfing. Close to the Mount Aspiring National Park, the area is a natural paradise.

Wanaka is about one hours drive from Queenstown. However, while the pace of life here is far more sedate and less huried than in Queenstown, Wanaka features many of the same high adrenalin activities and adventures. So if you want to do your paragliding, jetboating or rap jumping in a more quiet and secluded atmosphere, Wanaka may just be the place.

Wanaka is also very near several excellent ski areas (such as Treble Cone and Cardrona) and some very good places to go tramping. Many of the most popular activities in Wanaka involve the beautiful lake.

On the land

Skiing, heli-skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, rock climbing, wine tours, golf, golf-cross, mountain biking and heli-mountain biking, horse riding, monster trucks, quad bike and 4wd safaris, wilderness tours, transport museum, Puzzling World, hunting.

Walking / tramping is world class with trails for every ability in both Wanaka and the nearby Mt Aspiring National Park. A rewarding walk to the top of Roy's Peak (1587m) commences just six kilometres from town, with stunning alpine panoramas rewarding those who brave the three hour ascent.

In the air

Scenic flights, tandem skydiving from 15,000 feet, heli-sightseeing, helicopter fishing, tandem paragliding (parapenting), Warbirds museum, and flights in a Czech albatross jet fighter. Pick of the bunch is the scenic flight to Milford Sound: departing from Wanaka airport after breakfast, this flight literally passes through true "Lord of the Rings" scenery prior to landing at Milford Sound. The fiord cruise is stunning and the return flight to Wanaka will have you home in time for dinner.

On the water

Fly-fishing, boat fishing, lake cruises, jet boating, canyoning, white water rafting, white water sledging, boat dinghy and yacht charters, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing and two jet boating adventures to rival any in New Zealand.
