WANAKA NEW ZEALAND - LOCAL SCENIC WALKS
All walks named below can all be found within the immediate area around the Lake Wanaka township.
Mount Roy Track
A 5 minute drive or a 6km bike ride from the township will take you to the start of this track which is right at the base of the mountain. Most of Lake Wanaka can be seen, along with an awesome view of Mount Aspiring and surrounding mountains and glaciers.
Waterfall Creek Walk
The track starts on the left hand side of Roys Bay - which is the main beach in Lake Wanaka. It then follows the shoreline - around to Waterfall Creek and beyond to a high point on the Wanaka side of Damper Bay. Wanaka Station Park, on the left near the beginning of the walk, is a beautiful spot for picnics. The track continues along the front of Edgewater Resort Hotel and Rippon Vineyard to Waterfall Creek, and then follows terraces around to a high point, which offers great views of Wanaka Township and the lake.
Eely Point Walk
A short walk beside Lake Wanaka, starting at the boat ramps in the village. Eely Point is reached in about 15 minutes. Sheltered from the prevailing wind, Eely Point is a popular boating and picnicking area.
Beacon Point Walk
From Bremner Bay this track follows the shoreline of Lake Wanaka to Penrith Beach, providing great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. By following the road from Penrith Beach you can join up with the Lake Outlet Walk.
Diamond Lake Track
From the Mount Aspiring Road take a sign posted right turn about 25 minutes drive out of Wanaka at the end of Hospital Flat. The 3-hour return trip begins at the gate and climbs steadily to the lake (15 minutes) and then to the summit of Rocky Hill.
Lake Outlet Walk
A well-formed track beside the Clutha River. Its best to drive or bike to the outlet from the centre of town (5min drive, 6km bike). The track goes from the Lake Wanaka outlet to Albert Town.
